80 proposed categories based on rosters, awards, official catalogs and finite lists. Each has a defined scope and a candidate source. There is no finite list of every possible category.
These answer sets have not been imported or verified. A source link is a starting point, not proof of complete coverage. Some categories may have too few answers without repeated letters to make good puzzles.

- Define membership. Official team rosters at a stated date; include injured and two-way players, exclude free agents.
- Import the whole roster. Keep player and team IDs, the source and capture time. Check every team and every result page; flag missing teams and unexpected count changes.
- Define the answer. Surname only. Keep compound surnames intact, handle accents and punctuation consistently, and omit generational suffixes using structured name data. No invented nicknames or automatic last-word guessing.
- Filter and test. Deduplicate surnames, retain source-player links, remove repeated-letter spellings, and check compatible puzzle solutions.
- Freeze the edition. Refresh and review before a new puzzle is published. Keep older roster snapshots with archived puzzles.
“Current” must always mean current at the edition’s displayed cutoff. Scheduled refreshes and a live NBA importer are not enabled yet.
